Developing an Innovative Future - Information and Communication Technologies powered by Space
Details
Cloud Signals has developed a product bundle offering the transport network that connects the core net-work and the RAN (Radio Access Network) of the mobile network, services making use of the 5G stand-ards, and addressing 5G vertical markets (ubiquitous coverage, disaster relief, public safety require-ments, emergency response, remote sensor connectivity, broadcast service, etc.) as well as corresponding use cases. To support the broadest range of use cases, 5G needs to integrate within a comprehensive sys-tem of all available communication technologies, exploiting their strengths and values. Satellite networks are among the most mature communication technologies, having specific advantages in geographically distributed and dynamic networks. They provide highly efficient, effective, and expedient network deploy-ments, leveraging their intrinsic advantages in broadcasting capabilities, global coverage, reduced reliance on terrestrial infrastructure, and high security. Satellite networks are nowadays considered as part of the 5G use case deployments. Many use cases can be better and more rapidly served using an integrated 5G satellite-terrestrial network rather than relying on terrestrial-only solutions. These include providing com-munication services to remote areas and to rural and dense urban environments, like on-premises local networks, content distribution, content acquisition, highly distributed IoT networks, and private mobile and nomadic network deployments. Cloud Signals was founded by executives in the space and telecom industries and leverages the founders’ 20+ years of experience and resources to address innovative solu-tions and opportunities in satellite operations, telecommunication payloads, ESA, and EC projects, as well as the telecommunications markets in 4 continents.

Facilities: Cloud Signals operates from a purpose-built professional environment that supports day-to-day engineering, system integration, and project management activities, fully equipped with secure IT infrastructure, collaboration tools, and controlled-access data-handling facilities. Building on its participation in multiple ESA and EU-funded activities in the domains of satellite communications, RF monitoring, spectrum management and 5G-NTN integration, Cloud Signals has established—together with its industrial and academic partners—a flexible over-the-air testbed enabling the validation of satellite and terrestrial backhauling use cases, interference detection scenarios and spectrum-efficiency assessments. The testbed supports end-to-end experimentation across GEO and LEO satellite systems and terrestrial nodes, and includes an application environment for verifying and benchmarking candidate hardware and software components under operationally realistic conditions. Connectivity to external teleports and national monitoring infrastructures is achieved through secure IP-based VPN interconnections, allowing controlled access to live satellite links and RF monitoring resources without geographic constraints. This architecture enables Cloud Signals to perform remote integration, testing and validation campaigns with teleports pointing to operational satellites in both Geostationary and Non-Geostationary orbits, while remaining fully compliant with ITU Radio Regulations, national authorisation frameworks and ESA security requirements. Complementing these external connectivity capabilities, Cloud Signals has deployed a dedicated private 5G network testbed within its facilities. This localized environment enables the active development and integration of a complete 5G architecture, incorporating a fully functional 5G Core (Open5GS), next-generation NodeBs (gNBs) within the Radio Access Network (RAN), and simulated User Equipment (UEs). The primary objective of this specialized network is to evaluate, optimize, and demonstrate the seamless integration of satellite communications—such as Starlink, OneWeb or similar Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations—as a resilient, high-throughput backhaul solution for 5G edge networks. The combination of in-house facilities, partner-provided infrastructure and proven remote experimentation capabilities provides Cloud Signals with a reusable and scalable technical foundation, directly supporting activities related to spectrum occupancy assessment, interference characterisation, backhauling performance evaluation and regulatory use-case validation.
