5G Ventures S.A. is a Greek investment-management company and a direct subsidiary of the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations (HCAP), established to manage the Phaistos Investment Fund, a €101 million fund dedicated to companies developing 5G-related technologies, products and services in Greece. Its investment strategy spans advanced digital infrastructure, connectivity, AI, IoT and other 5G-enabled applications, and it has developed a particularly strong link with the space sector through investments in companies using satellite infrastructure to extend next-generation connectivity. Notable space-related investments include OQ Technology, which is building a hybrid terrestrial–LEO satellite 5G/NB-IoT network and has established OQ Technology Hellas in Greece, and D-Orbit, a leading space-logistics company providing in-orbit satellite transportation, deployment, hosted-payload and space-cloud services; both investments strengthen Greece’s capabilities in satellite communications, non-terrestrial networks and advanced space technologies.
The Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission (EETT) is Greece’s independent regulatory authority for electronic communications and postal services and also exercises competition-law powers in these sectors. EETT manages and monitors the national radio-frequency spectrum, grants spectrum rights of use and regulates satellite services involving communications between terrestrial and space stations. Its space-related role includes licensing and supervision of satellite communications, spectrum coordination and interference monitoring, and operation and planned expansion of the EOS–ΗΩΣ Satellite Spectrum Monitoring System (SSMS), which strengthens Greece’s capability to monitor satellite-frequency use and protect satellite communications from harmful interference.
The Institute of Robotics (I.RO.) of the Athena Research Center was formally established in 2023 as Greece’s first research institute dedicated specifically to robotics science and technology. It builds on the pre-existing Robot Perception and Interaction Unit and conducts research across robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, perception, human–robot interaction and intelligent control. Within the space ecosystem, I.RO.’s expertise is particularly relevant to autonomous navigation, robotic perception, manipulation, AI-enabled inspection and operation in unstructured or hazardous environments, supporting future applications in planetary exploration, orbital servicing, autonomous spacecraft systems and remote inspection.
OQ Technology Group (OQTEC) is a new-space start-up with the mission of providing global coverage for IoT and M2M connectivity using 4G/5G standards. OQTEC is headquartered in Luxembourg and has branches in Greece, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Rwanda, and the USA. OQTEC has a diverse team comprising expertise from both the space and telecommunications worlds. OQTEC has been successful in launching multiple missions (8 satellites successfully launched and operational in orbit), proving its experience in satellite channel processing, communication IoT protocol design, and modelling for satellite payloads, using terrestrial telecommunication standard NB-IoT, mission management, platform procurement, satellite AIT, and launch aspects. OQTEC launched its own satellite demonstrator mission, MACSAT, on 2023, funded by LSA and technically managed by ESA. The satellite, currently in the LEOP, shall demonstrate NB-IoT communication via satellites. Throughout this project, OQTEC has built the necessary experience for adapting, developing, and testing standard terrestrial protocol stacks for satellite communications. This experience has also allowed OQTEC to be a registered member of ETSI and 3GPP and to have an active participation in contributing towards the standardisation of 4G/5G communications over NTNs. The company team includes 30 team members globally.
Space Innovation Solutions SpaceIS aims to revolutionise satellite connectivity via its novel 3Dprinted multibeam antenna Over the next few years it is anticipated that a large number of satellite constellations will be orbiting Earth in nongeosynchronous orbit NGSO providing a wide range of broadband services The key feature that differentiates NGSO from GSO systems is that the ground terminal must track relatively fastmoving satellites as they transverse the visible sky and communication must be handed from one satellite to another SpaceIS can offer seamless satellite handover makebeforebreak with very low cost and efficient SWaP Size Weight and Power Its antenna can bend radio waves through its unique lenses creating beams that communicate with several satellites in different orbits and angles with no moving parts all at the same time
