The Institute of Accelerating Systems and Applications (IASA) is an interdisciplinary research institute in Athens affiliated with departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Its research spans accelerator science and engineering, nuclear and particle physics, nuclear medicine and imaging, automated control, scientific computing, environmental physics, microwave engineering and telecommunications. Within the space ecosystem, IASA’s expertise is particularly relevant to particle and radiation physics, detector and instrumentation technologies, RF and microwave systems, advanced control and data-acquisition systems, scientific computing, and radiation-environment studies that can support space science, satellite payloads and space-system testing.
The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) is the research institute of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Established in 1989, ICCS conducts interdisciplinary research across hardware and software technologies, computer networks, digital communications, automation, energy systems, biomedical and biomechanical technologies, information systems, decision-support systems and photonics. Within the space ecosystem, ICCS is highly relevant through its activities in satellite and quantum communications, photonics, RF and microwave systems, AI, robotics, cybersecurity, sensing, Earth Observation applications and advanced electronics, while also supporting technology transfer and the creation of deep-tech spin-offs.
The Laboratory of Thermal Turbomachines (LTT) of the School of Mechanical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) conducts research, education and industrial collaboration in turbomachinery, gas turbines, jet propulsion, aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, engine modelling, performance monitoring and fault diagnostics. Its facilities include low- and high-speed turbomachinery test rigs, advanced flow-measurement instrumentation and diagnostic systems, while its research covers real-time engine models, probabilistic and AI-assisted diagnostics, aerodynamic optimisation and aircraft-engine health monitoring. Within the space ecosystem, LTT is particularly relevant to propulsion-system modelling, turbomachinery for aerospace applications, UAV and aircraft engine testing, high-speed aerodynamics, condition monitoring and technologies that can support future space propulsion and flight systems.
The Microwave and Fiber Optics Laboratory (MFOL) of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) conducts research and education in microwave engineering, antennas, electromagnetic propagation and scattering, fiber-optic communications, advanced wireless systems, and related RF technologies. Its work has included satellite communication channel modelling, millimetre-wave propagation, antenna and microwave component development, electromagnetic imaging, and more recently research relevant to 5G/B5G/6G communications and intelligent metasurface-based systems. Within the space ecosystem, MFOL is particularly relevant to satellite communications, RF and microwave payloads, antennas, propagation modelling, ground-segment technologies and integrated terrestrial–non-terrestrial networks.
The Research Lab of Advanced, Composite, Nano Materials & Nanotechnology (R-NANO) of the School of Chemical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) conducts research in the design, production and characterisation of advanced, composite and nanostructured materials. Its activities include carbon-, polymer- and ceramic-based nanomaterials, fibre production and treatment, composite manufacturing and circularity, additive manufacturing, chemical synthesis, chemical vapour deposition, polymer processing and advanced materials characterisation. Within the space ecosystem, R-NANO is particularly relevant to lightweight and multifunctional materials, advanced composites, surface treatments, additive manufacturing and material systems for demanding aerospace and space environments.
